The power of a goal

Posted on 13. Nov, 2007 by in Life Coaching

It’s late, my eyes are tired but I’m compelled to write. There’s a sense of accountability, timing and of course a deadline always helps. What’s your deadline? What if I said, it’s 7 weeks away to January 1st, 2008? Do you feel a flood of accomplishment, satisfaction and appreciation for the year that is soon to pass?

I wrote my goals for 2007 on the first page of my day planner (yes, I still use one) and at least 4 times a year I review those goals. I never erase them, there they sit inked on a page with little relevance to what actually unfolded throughout the year. But, the point is they’re still there and every so often they call for my attention. Somehow despite what happens they state a clear intention, a willingness to take action or at very best a fantastic outcome.

They remind me of my priorities and my personal accountability. They remind me of how much perseverance it takes to reach goals and what I must do each day, each week, each month to scratch the surface and make a remarkable change.

Some of the goals may be highly speculative or not realistic but for the most part, when I really take a hard look, there are actions taken in the past year that are reflected in those goals. Goals are not easy to write, nor achieve; however, they inspire us to move beyond the status quo, take a step in a new direction and outline the things that matter to us at the start of a year.

With 7 weeks to go until 2008, what would you like to acknowledge, take action on and achieve? There may be highlights to celebrate and other things that require more effort or thought. Accountability to yourself and most significantly your possibilities and dreams is highly motivating. Start tonight, tomorrow or the next, but don’t ever underestimate the power of a goal and your capacity to reach it!
