Dog on a leash

As I was coaching two business partners yesterday, I was immediately connected to their experience of being held back and yet so eager and ready to go. Being rather ambitious myself, eager to use my strengths, feel productive and not really one to enjoy waiting; is like having a big stick or ball thrown in front of me but not being able to reach it or get it. So what do you do? Turn around and look at who’s holding the leash and say “bite me” – not.

Although our instincts tell us otherwise, we learn to be patient, account for the things we have done well to get us out the door and strategize our next lead. In these circumstances, often the restraint is out of our control, therefore we look to the things we can control or already have within our scope. For instance, if we are waiting for financing then it just might be worthwhile to consider building on the relationships within our business and the processes that create effective leadership and organization.

When we feel this restraint, it forces up to stay really present as to what can we do now that has direct influence on our lives and business. When we are ready to charge ahead we loose sight of the details that actually help us get to the target or catch the prize. Personally, it’s tough to do but I found it so helpful to have another person to talk with or help me manage my eagerness to move forward and associated tension. Coaches need coaches, trusted supports and friends. My clients need the same.

Like a dog and it’s owner, when we encourage a healthy pace and reward every so often with a big run off the leash; all the power of our strengths, foresight and instinct lay to rest for a lovely reward.
